Field Trip Report from Scott Laurent - Seed Team at Rocky Point Glade in Swope Park

You probably remember the last time we visited Rocky Point Glade in Swope Park .  I still have memories of that soggy line of would be naturalists trudging through the rain.  Recently, three Master Naturalist's (Linda Williams, Becky Selzer, and Scott Laurent) returned to the Rocky Point Glade to assist in a workday to sow prairie seeds on the glade.

Seeds were collected from identified plants located on area prairies and glades last summer and fall.  The seeds are stored until late winter. Some are mixed together in a seed blend while others are kept separate and carefully sowed in just the right areas for better growth.  Among the seeds that were sown were Pale Indian Plantain, Pale Purple Coneflower, Lead Plant, Hoary Pucoon, and Wild Hyacinth.

The day was crisp, the wind cold but the work was made easy by many hands.  We spent three hours, sowing, raking and stomping seeds at several locations along the glade.  With faith that spring is just around the corner we hope that our seeds will turn into beautiful prairie flowers.  I can't wait.
