Squaw Creek Trip Report

from GKCMN Becky S.

On Friday, December 15, 2006, six of us went to Squaw Creek to do some birding.  We (Carrie, Mel, Sarah, Susan, Linda, and Becky) left Kansas City quite early and arrived at Squaw Creek for our own private tour.

Sarah had contacted Ron, the person in charge of the office, to conduct a tour for us.  He did, it was educational, informational and fun.  After he left we looked for more birds around the water, in the prairie grasses and on a trail through the loess hills.  What a day!

We concluded by detouring to Nodaway Lake to search for the rare Snowy Owl. The Snowy Owl(s) has been sighted there a couple of times.

We had spotted approximately 45 birds.  Some favorites were: the Hooded Merganser (female), the Belted Kingfisher,  the Shoveler, over 20 Bald Eagles and the Ring-Necked Pheasant.

Thanks to Becky for sharing their trip with us.
